What is the Lymph System?

The lymph system is made up of a network of lymph nodes, lymph ducts, and lymph vessels that move lymph from tissues into the bloodstream. The lymph is an essential part of your body’s immune system.

Lymph is a clear or white fluid that is made of white blood cells (called lymphocytes) that attack bacteria in the blood. Lymph also includes fluid from the intestines (referred to as chyle) that contains fats and proteins.

Lymph nodes are soft, small, round structures that are not easy to see or feel. They’re located in clusters around the body, including in the neck, armpits, groin, and inside the chest & abdomen. Lymph nodes work to create immune cells that help the body fight infections. They also filter lymph fluid to remove harmful substances such as bacteria and cancer cells.

When an infection is recognised in the body, the lymph nodes begin producing blood cells that fight infection. This can cause swelling in the lymph nodes that can be felt.

The lymph system includes:

  • Tonsils
  • Adenoids
  • Spleen
  • Thymus

This is only a general overview of the lymph system. As you can see, it’s an important part of your body! But what is lymphatic drainage massage?

What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage Leeds?

Sometimes, lymphatic fluid can lead to lymphedema, a buildup of too much lymphatic fluid in the body. The fluid may gather in certain parts of the body, where it causes painful swelling. This can be a serious condition that can be treated by lymphatic drainage massage.

Lymphatic drainage (also referred to as manual lymphatic drainage) is a gentle massage used to alleviate or prevent painful swelling caused by swelling of the lymph fluid. This condition is also called lymphedema. Lymphedema can be a problem in the arms and legs. This condition can cause:

  • Brain fog
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Depression
  • Bloating
  • Dry or itchy skin
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Reduced immunity
  • Sinus infections
  • Weight gain
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Lymphatic drainage Leeds can also be beneficial after certain types of surgery to reduce swelling and discomfort.

What are the Symptoms of Lymphedema?

Lymphatic drainage Leeds can help treat lymphedema. Symptoms of lymphedema can include the following:

    • Pain
    • Skin discolouration
    • Swelling of tissues
    • Weakness
    • Hardening or thickening of the skin
    • Recurring infections

    Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic drainage massage can help relieve the symptoms of lymphedema. While it is possible to treat this condition with compression bandages or stockings, manual lymphatic drainage massage can produce additional benefits, including:

Lymphedema after mastectomy: is a common occurrence, and it can be relieved with lymph drainage massage. The massage can relieve mild to moderate symptoms after surgery.

Treat other conditions: lymphatic drainage massage has also been shown to ease the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and tissue swelling. It can also help with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) to help improve blood flow. This type of massage can also help with femoral artery flow, fibromyalgia, and more.

The major benefit of lymphatic drainage massage Leeds is the relief of swelling and pain. You can experience relief of symptoms and improvement in the flow of lymph throughout the body.

What Happens During Lymph Drainage Massage Leeds?

Before you choose to undergo a lymphatic drainage massage, we strongly recommend checking with your doctor first. It’s important to ensure the massage doesn’t cause harm and only works to provide you with relief from the symptoms you have.

Once your doctor has given you the OK to proceed, one of our experienced massage therapists will provide you with a professional lymph drainage massage. Our massage therapist follows a specific sequence that includes various massage techniques. These may include stretching, gliding, compressing, and cupping motions.

Lymphatic massage uses only light, rhythmic movements to stimulate the lymphatic system. No hard pressure is used for lymphatic drainage massage. The massage is done to make the lymph fluid move easily through the nodes and tissues to ensure fluids are not trapped anywhere in the body.
